“You think, ‘Why would anyone want to see me again in a movie? And I don’t know how to act anyway, so why am I doing this?’” – Meryl Streep
It’s normal to experience feelings of doubt when we are faced with new or challenging situations. Self-doubt is characterized by feelings of uncertainty regarding one or more aspects of the self. It is something that we all may experience at certain times in our lives.
Self-doubt and imposter syndrome permeate the workplace.
A well-established and prominent sales executive began doubting whether she was qualified for the job, despite constant praise from her clients. Each action that chipped away at her role in her work doubly chipped away at her confidence. She became plagued by deep anxiety, self-hatred, and the feeling that she was a fraud.
Any recognition she earned, she called it sympathy or pity. Despite linking her accomplishments to luck, she took on all the blame for any mistakes she made. Minor errors reinforced her belief in her lack of intelligence and ability.
If you have ever felt like your success has been a fluke, that you somehow “lucked out” or that you didn’t deserve it… you might be suffering from Imposter Syndrome.
- Who do you think you are?
- You don’t belong here.
- Your intellect and experiences are leagues behind that of your peers.
- There’s no way you’re cut out for this!
- Just wait, your proposal will be a flop and then everyone will know that you’re a fake.
- Everything turned out alright?
- The reviewers must not have been paying attention. After all, if you can do it, then anyone can do it.
“I have written 11 books, but each time I think, ‘uh oh, they’re going to find out now. I’ve run a game on everybody, and they’re going to find me out.’” – Maya Angelou

- It’s a sick sense of everything about to collapse around you, as though everything you’ve ever done is nothing more than a house of cards waiting to fall.
- The inability to believe your success is deserved as a result of your hard work and the fact you possess distinct skills, capabilities and experiences.
- Your inclination is to internalize that you got where you are by other means such as luck, or being in the right place at the right time.
Thoughts consistently swirl around in your head.

If you have experienced any of what has been described above, you may be directly sabotaging your own success. Your own-self image could very well be the one thing holding you back from what you truly want in life.
Take a moment to ponder the following questions…

- Do you think people praise you only because they’re being polite or have to for some reason?
- Do you tell people you faked it when you do receive praise?
- Do you think you faked it and somehow accomplished what you did?
- Do you minimize your input, as though you’re not sure of what you’re saying even though you are?
- Do you feel like other people have it easier than you?
- Do you frequently look for validation from others?
- Does the idea of success scare you?
